Bubbling over with enthusiasm for Welsh Wool

Thursday 10 April 2008

Bubbling over with enthusiasm for Welsh wool

Designers, artists, knitters, spinners, makers and craftspeople are encouraged to get creative with the theme of “bubbles” for an exciting competition to celebrate the creative and imaginative uses of Welsh wool.

Winners’ entries and the best of the rest will then go on display to an audience of thousands at Wonderwool Wales 2008, which for the first time this year will be a stand-alone event, held all under one roof over the weekend of 26th and 27th April at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells, Powys, .

Winners will also have the option for their fantastic fibre creations to go on show for a month at The Wool Emporium at Penybont, Powys, a permanent showcase for workers and makers in wool from and the Marches . Alternatively they can choose a voucher to be spent at Wonderwool Wales 2008.

Said Lee Price, from competition organisers Glasu, the Powys LEADER + rural development programme: “The competition is designed to celebrate the beautiful and innovative creations that can be made using Welsh Wool.

“All competitors have to do is to produce their own interpretation of the theme, using a minimum of 75% Welsh wool – coloured or otherwise. The creative possibilities are endless and, as in previous years, I’m sure crafty participants will surprise the judges with their imaginative ideas.

“All wool sources must be traceable, and to help in this we have published information about suppliers of local wool and other raw materials that might be needed for people’s crafty creations on the Wonderwool Wales website.”

There are two categories in the competition and entries, accompanied by the £5 entry fee, must be received by February 29th 2008. The wide ranging general category for creative items interpreting “bubbles” could include anything from an item of clothing to a rug, a piece of art to a sculpture, an item of jewellery to a mobile, a cushion to a car seat, a handbag to a dog lead.

This year also sees the introduction of a new category for a minimum of 20g of hand spun yarn. Entry forms and copies of the competition rules are available in English and Welsh and can be obtained by e-mailing leepr@powys.gov.uk or by phoning 01982 552224. Alternatively they can be downloaded from the Wonderwool Wales website www.wonderwoolwales.co.uk

The Wonder of Wool competition is just one of the features of the 2008 Wonderwool Wales festival, which this year, as a stand-alone show, promises to be bigger and better than ever. Whilst maintaining a focus on Welsh wool and wool products, it is a celebration of all natural fibres and will include alpaca, mohair, angora, hemp and flax. Organisers are also planning to feature more exotic examples such as silk and fibres made from bamboo and soya.

The festival will include everything from raw materials to designer fashion and will have something for everyone with a range of stalls, exhibits, activities, demonstrations and competitions. As well as inspiring ideas, beautiful textile art and the great diversity of fibres on display, there will be the chance to see different sheep breeds and a sheep shearing display.

As in previous years, it will include a Woolschool featuring a packed programme of workshops, talks and lectures led by local, national and international experts. The Sheepwalk, an alternative fashion show, will feature some of the beautiful items produced by the traders exhibiting at the showcase.

More details about plans for the 2008 show are now available on the Wonderwool Wales website www.wonderwoolwales.co.uk.
