Celebrity launch for Mid Wales mouthful
Friday 25 January 2008Celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson heads up the list of chefs, cooks and food lovers who will be enjoying a multitude of mouth-watering morsels at the Mid Wales Mouthful food festival in April.
This new showcase of food and drink from Powys and its bordering counties is being held as part of Wonderwool Wales, a popular event celebrating Welsh wool and natural fibres, which takes place over the weekend of 26th and 27th April at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells, Powys.
Organisers are delighted that the well-loved TV chef and restaurateur, who is also a prolific author and passionate campaigner on food issues, has lent his support to the event. They have just announced that he will perform the official opening with Elin Jones AM, the Welsh Assembly Government Minister for Rural Affairs at 10.15 am on Saturday 26th April.
Said Sally Shiels of Glasu, the Powys LEADER+ rural development programme, said: “We are really excited that Mid Wales Mouthful promises to be a fantastic foodie event, celebrating the wonderful diversity of food and drink produced throughout the region. More than 50 stalls will feature quality regional products, artisan and speciality food and gourmet ingredients.
There will be organic Welsh Black beef, tatsy speciality cheeses, luxury cakes and chocolates and Welsh beers, ciders and wines. Stallholders will include producers Glasu have supported as part of their New Harvest project, such as Wales True Taste Award winners Elan Valley Mutton Company. There will also be a great choice of food to eat on the day from a diverse range of caterers serving fast food of the highest quality.
The weekend programme of cookery demonstrations will also include several led by Peter James MBE, chef and owner of Drovers Rest Restaurant in Llanwrtyd Wells and Nick Davies, of Cambrian Training who is a senior member of the Welsh National Culinary team and food columnist for the
Other attractions include cookery workshops, tastings and talks, and Young Farmers Clubs in Powys will put their skills to the test in a special cookery competition, ‘Ready Steady Powys’, on Sunday 27th April. Tere will be lots to entertain children too, with the Fruit ‘n’ Vegetorium, where they can turn food into an artwork and the chance to use bicycle-power to make their own fresh fruit smoothie.
The Mid Wales Mouthful is being held alongside the 2008 Wonderwool Wales festival, which this year, as a stand-alone show, promises to be bigger and better than ever. Whilst maintaining a focus on Welsh wool and wool products, it is a celebration of the great diversity of all natural fibres. Including everything from raw materials to designer fashion, it will have something for everyone - a range of stalls, exhibits, activities, demonstrations and competitions as well as inspiring ideas and beautiful textile art. There will also be the chance to see different sheep breeds and a sheep shearing display.
It will include a Woolschool featuring a packed programme of workshops, talks and lectures led by local, national and international experts. The Sheepwalk, an alternative fashion show featuring guest model Antony Worrall Thompson, will highlight some of the beautiful items produced by exhibiting traders.
Like Mid Wales Mouthful, Wonderwool Wales is being organised by Glasu, and admission to both events is £5.00 for adults, with children under 16 free.
