Kids Get Growing at New Food Festival

Thursday 10 April 2008

Kids Get Growing at New Food Festival

Children in Mid Wales are going to be encouraged to get growing their own grub at a new food festival in April. Members of the Powys Growers Group will be giving away organic vegetable seeds to children under 16 at the Mid Wales Mouthful food festival on 26th and 27th April at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells.

The free seeds are being given out to encourage children to grow their own vegetables in order to understand where their food comes from and how it grows. Hopefully they will also enjoy nurturing their plants and eating the fruits of their labour too!

The Powys Growers Group is an independent group made up of people directly involved in growing and supplying fresh fruit and vegetables in Powys, to raise the profile of small-scale horticulture in the region and provide a support network. The group was formed from a European-funded project run by Glasu, the LEADER+ rural regeneration programme in Powys, who are also sponsors of the seed give-away and organisers of the food festival.

The organic vegetable seeds will be supplied by Tamar Organics. The choice of varieties on offer will include colourful options such as rainbow chard, Jack ’o’ Lantern pumpkins and a dwarf purple French beans, as well as popular easy-to-grow favourites such as salad cress and little gem lettuce. One packet of seeds will be given out per child, while stocks last.

Mid Wales Mouthful food festival is a new event and will feature more than 60 stalls of mouthwatering food and drink from Powys and neighbouring counties. The event will be opened by celebrity TV chef and supporter of organic food Antony Worrall Thompson, who will also be demonstrating local food recipes on Saturday 26th April.

Other healthy eating attractions for families include a bicycle-powered fruit smoothie machine provided by Small World Theatre and the Fruit’n’Vegetorium mobile workshop, who will be looking for people of all ages to get involved in creating an artwork mandala from fruit and vegetables.

The food show will run alongside a unique Welsh wool and natural fibre festival, Wonderwool Wales. Admission is to both event and costs £5 for adults, with children under 16 free. For more information visit www.wonderwoolwales.co.uk/mouthful or telephone Glasu on 01982 552224.

For further information please contact: Lee Price or Sally Shiels, Glasu, tel: 01982 552224.
