Top young chefs from Young Farmers Clubs in Powys, will be cooking up a treat at a new food festival in April. The "Ready, Steady, Powys" cookery competition, sponsored by Cambrian Training, will take place in the Mid Wales Mouthful cookery theatre from 10am to 2pm on Sunday 27th April.
Two cookery champions from Builth Wells, Tregynon and Howey Young Farmer's Clubs will take part. They will each have half an hour to cook a main course using local produce. Competitors will be asked to use at least one ingredient bought on the day from the wide range of stallholders at the festival.
Sally Shiels of Glasu, the Powys LEADER+ rural development programme, said, “The cookery competition is a great way to showcase the fresh, quality ingredients produced in Mid Wales and to encourage young people to cook with them."
Local chefs from the three shires have been selected as judges for the competition. Nick Davies (Montgomeryshire) of Cambrian Training is a senior member of the Welsh National Culinary team. Suzanne Davies (Radnorshire) is a judge for the annual True Taste Awards. Peter James MBE (Breconshire) is the head chef/owner of the Drover's Rest Restaurant in Llanwrtyd Wells. The three judges will also be providing their own cookery demonstrations during the weekend.
The winning team will receive a cash prize, kindly sponsored by Cambrian Training, and all competitors will also take home a specially designed Mid Wales Mouthful apron and a recipe book signed by celebrity TV chef Antony Worrall Thompson, who will have opened the festival and demonstrated recipes on Saturday.
