SHIBORI WET FELTING
With Feltmaker Emma Jackson
Monday 30th April 2012
Using the Japanese art of Shibori to learn the binding techniques Kanoko and Nui and applying these to wet hand-feltmaking, Emma will show you how to create exciting high relief textured and patterned surfaces. You will learn how to create shape resist felt, fusing ancient and modern techniques, working in colour or white to dye at a later date.
MATERIALS: You will need to bring the following-
Wool Tops - Merino 64s-70s (easiest for quicker felting, but you are welcome to bring a range of wool breeds you like to work with). Bring colours you would like to use, alternatively you may like to use white and dye your piece at a later date.
String - Strong parcel / butcher's string
Sewing needles - at least 6
Sewing thread - important to use strong synthetic threads that can be pulled tightly and knotted without snapping
Scissors - small & sharp
Rubber gloves - washing up variety
Felting Solution - your preferred combination soap / water
Waterproof objects - eg buttons, dowels, balls, plastic tubing - look around and find any objects you would like to use to bind into the wool to shape round (avoid sharp edges / non-waterproof / anything too heavy / sizes above 1" (3-4cm)). Bring at least 15-20 objects all the same or a variety
Bubble wrap - sufficient for your sample sizes (suggest min 0.5m x 0.5m)
Thin plastic sheeting - weight similar to supermarket shopping bag (0.5x1m)
Bowl / Plastic bag
Camera & notebook to record your progress
Optional - Open weave fabric and other fibres you may like to add to your wrap for additional surface decoration (eg Cotton/silk/poly scrim, organza and silks/soya/fancy yarns etc. Do dye and fix prior to workshop if you would like to use colour).
A supply of bubble wrap, floor underlay & some foam pipe lagging tubes will be available in case anyone cannot obtain them or forgets theirs.
