







This is a round-up of the topics on offer at Woolschool 2010. Talks, costing £5.00, will last about one hour each. Half day workshops last two and a half hours and cost £25.00 per person whilst short workshops, at about one hour, are priced at £10.00. Cost of Materials will be charged directly by Tutors.

Ann Reynolds and Diane Moore. Many Alaskan artists still live an indigenous, subsistence lifestyle, their main cash source selling their artwork,created from Alaskan animals. See and feel Qiviut fibre from a musk ox and hear about the 21st century women artists who bring prosperity to their families. Enjoy sharing a small glimpse of sub-arctic life and fibre arts.
Sue Clow is an enthusiastic rag-rug maker from mid Wales (see www.zalingai.co.uk).
Students will learn the traditional rag-rugging techniques of hooking and prodding, whilst making a beautiful flower brooch, to be worn away from the workshop. The technique is versatile and can be used to decorate woollens and other loose-weave fabrics and can be incorporated into mixed media work as well as traditional rugs. Julie will teach some of the basic methods of ply-splitting that have been used traditionally to make camel girths and animal harnesses in North West India. Using 4ply cotton cords, students will make several key fob sized samples. Julie will also give a demonstration of cord making on the Apollo cord maker and there will be a chance to have a go at cord making. Students will see how the techniques can be developed into usable items by referring to Julie's collection of samples and finished pieces. www.juliehedges.co.uk

Using a combination of various fabrics with Merino wool, learn how to use texture and pattern in nuno felt to create small 'pictures'. This is a simple technique and no previous feltmaking experience is required. www.mandynash.co.uk

The workshop will consider length, size and number of needles, types of yarn, getting started and several different techniques. Students should be familiar with and be able to knit, purl, cast on and off, increase and decrease stitches. Maria will use her doll-making techniques to teach students how to make a pleasing little brooch in the form of a needle-sculpted, fabric face. This is a short workshop requiring basic sewing skills plus attentiveness. www.coblynes.co.uk

This technique involves the laddering and re-configuration of stitches within existing knitted fabrics. It's really versatile, allowing retrospective creation of integral knit/purl designs on plain stocking stitch fabric. www.keepandshare.co.uk
